Thomas John Sullivan, II, also known as T.J. died unexpectedly while sleeping on May 20, 2023. He was 47 years old. T.J. was born in Montclair, NJ and grew up in North Caldwell. He attended St. Peter’s Prep, Jersey City. T.J. excelled at Cross Country and Wrestling. He earned the “Outstanding Freshman Award”, which was later renamed the Magis Award. He received a BA at The University of Scranton where he met Maura, his best friend, and love of his life.

T.J. was the owner and operator of Grindstone Advisors, a media company in New York City where he enjoyed a 25-year successful career. Many admired and loved him, not just as a mentor, but also as a close friend. He was an active member of the University of Scranton Business Council, and a trustee of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Oranges. They honored him in 2007 as Irishman of the year. T.J. was proud of his role as a founder and board member for the St. Peter’s Prep War Dog Athletic Club. St. Peter’s Prep recognized T.J. as one of its Young Alumni of The Year.

T.J. was a man of larger-than life personality. T.J. approached every task with an individual flair. He never settled for the ordinary or small. All who knew him adored his quick wit and sense of humor. T.J. was a man of great heart who made friends easily. He enjoyed welcoming guests into his home and especially to his beloved Spring Lake Heights residence.

T.J. was particularly fond of the summers spent at the Jersey Shore. He considered himself a skilled surfer, and fishing with family and friends was a great pleasure for him. Cooking the catch afterwards was incredibly satisfying. T.J. was proud of his Irish heritage. He enjoyed golfing and a good steak. He also loved Pearl Jam, wine and Pearl Jam, but not necessarily in the order listed. Above all, T.J. treasured his relationships with family and friends.

T.J. was most proud to be a father. He was the perfect dad. He would be on the sidelines at their games as the loudest and most supportive fan. The highlight of his life was Dad’s Night, a production he produced and in which he starred.

T.J.’s beloved wife, Maura of 23 years and their devoted kids, Kayla Angel (Tommy), Erin Joan and Shannon Catherine, survive him. His loving father Tommy, sister Kelly King, her husband John and mother-in law Cathy Mendola are also survivors.
