Once upon a frosty winter’s day, back in 1964, a merry band of Veterans from Lorraine Post 29 VFW in Haverhill, MA, decided to weave a tapestry of holiday enchantment for their beloved town. Led by the jolly and legendary John T. Sullivan, fondly known as “Sully,” they conjured up the wondrous VFW Santa Parade. This spectacle would bring joy to young and old alike.
In those whimsical days of the ’60s and ’70s, the world was filled with marching bands and delightful drum and bugle corps. Sully and his comrades would twirl their wizardry and create magical alliances with these musical troupes, swapping favors and harmony as they danced through each other’s parades in jubilant camaraderie.
But, oh, by 1985, the parade faced a challenge, for Sully had journeyed to the North Star, leaving behind a legacy of holiday cheer. The steadfast Veterans, like Cormick W. “Mac” Crosley and Walter G. Kalaus, joined by newcomers Bob Adams and Lyman “Tinker” Biggart, alongside Sully’s son, Thomas J. Sullivan, stood together, their hearts alight with the spirit of their dear founder.
With stars in his eyes, Thomas took up the Chairman’s mantle, leading the parade for fifteen radiant years. A host of merry volunteers rallied by his side, and the train thrived joyfully. Among them, Joan Cranton, with her sparkling touch, guided the festivities from 2001-2004, while Roland Plourde, a magical maestro, conducted the celebration from 2005-2014.
And so, the parade flourished, the team ever-growing, as Raymond “Yaz” Jackson, Charles “Charlie” Paone, Gordon Stone, Richard “Dick” Willett, Sue (Crosley) Bergeron, Amy Miette, David Cannata, and William “Bill” Biggart joined the wondrous ensemble. They sprinkled fairy dust on the festivities, ensuring that laughter and merriment echoed through the streets.
May your spirits soar with joy and your hearts be warm as we journey together through the enchanting wonderland of the VFW Santa Parade. With gratitude in our hearts, we thank you for your interest and support in making this holiday marvel come alive in the City of Haverhill. Ho, ho, ho, and a merry, magical celebration!
